St. Óscar Romero (1917 - 1980) was archbishop of San Salvador, a fierce advocate of the poor and spoke out against human rights abuses in his home country and abroad. He was assassinated by far right militants while celebrating mass in 1980 and canonized in 2018 by Pope Francis.
